Unlocking Peace and Connection: The Active Path of Myung Sung Meditation

Stepping into the world of Tae Kwon Do as a young student, I expected to learn the art of self-defense, discipline, and physical prowess. Little did I know that my journey would extend far beyond the kicks and punches, leading me to the profound wisdom of Myung Sung meditation.

I vividly remember the first time I was introduced to the Korean form of meditation that defied the traditional notion of stillness and quiet contemplation. It was through my Tae Kwon Do instructor, Master Jeff Johansen, that I discovered this dynamic and active approach to connecting with oneself and the world.

Master Jeff's lessons were never confined to the walls of the dojo. Instead, he wove the principles of Myung Sung into every aspect of our training, urging us to embrace life's challenges as opportunities for growth and self-discovery. With his guidance, I soon realized that this practice was more than just a physical routine—it was a pathway to uncovering the depths of my true self.

Through the dynamic movements and intentional breathwork of Tae Kwon Do, I began to understand the essence of Myung Sung meditation. It was an invitation to be fully present in each moment, to engage with life with a heightened awareness. Instead of seeking stillness and detachment, we embraced the active exploration of our bodies, minds, and surroundings.

Master Jeff's teachings went beyond the physicality of Tae Kwon Do. He encouraged us to recognize the interconnectedness of all living beings, instilling in us a sense of respect and compassion for every creature on this planet. He believed that by cultivating a deep understanding of our place in the world, we could harmonize our actions with the natural order and create a ripple of positivity that transcended our existence.

Under his guidance, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, using the principles of Myung Sung to navigate the challenges of my daily life. I discovered the power of balance, making decisions that aligned with my inner truth while considering the impact on others. I learned to widen my perspective, shedding the limitations of self-interest and embracing empathy as a guiding force.

As I reflect on my journey, I am grateful for the gift of Tae Kwon Do and the invaluable teachings of Master Jeff Johansen. Through his guidance, I honed my physical skills and discovered the transformative power of Myung Sung meditation—a dynamic practice that connects us to our true selves, fosters compassion, and unveils the boundless potential within us all.

Lessons Learned

Central to Myung Sung is the recognition of our inherent connectedness. Every living being, whether plant or animal, shares a bond that intertwines us all. Some call it energy, others refer to it as a life force. I prefer to describe it as connectedness – a web that unites us all. Through the practice of Myung Sung, we awaken to this interconnectedness, gaining a profound understanding of ourselves, our relationships, and our impact on the world.

Embarking on this journey requires patience and dedication. The eight keys of Myung Sung serve as guideposts along the path, helping us unlock peace and connection without the need for a meditation pillow:

  1. Know your true self: Delve deep to unravel the layers and uncover your authentic self. Embrace self-discovery and embark on a path of personal growth and clarity of purpose.

  2. Balance what is right and what is true: Align your inner state with the external world. Cultivate a moral compass that guides your decisions, harmonizing what feels right within you and what serves the greater good.

  3. Avoid Doe Chi: Break free from the constraints of limited perspectives. Expand your worldview, seeing beyond the narrow tunnel vision of self-interest. Embrace empathy, understanding, and accountability for your actions.

  4. Become a legacy of goodness: Embrace the power of your actions. Plant seeds of goodness that transcend your time on this Earth, leaving a positive impact for future generations to cherish.

  5. Live with honor: Respect and honor the interconnectedness of all living things. Approach the world with kindness, compassion, and an appreciation for the diverse roles and contributions of every being.

  6. Change your reality for the better: Unleash the power within to shape your reality. Release the grip of external influences and let your inner world guide your external experiences. Find strength, resilience, and a clear vision for a brighter future.

  7. Be a vessel of wisdom: Seek wisdom in every corner of life. Embrace the journey of firsthand experiences, allowing wisdom to nourish your mind, generate inner peace, and bridge the gaps that separate us.

  8. Work in harmony with your surroundings: Surrender to the natural flow of life. Align yourself with the interconnected rhythms of the world, fostering balance and well-being for your mind, body, and spirit.

Myung Sung meditation is an invitation to live fully, to immerse ourselves in the beauty and chaos of existence while finding inner peace and deep connection. So let us step away from stillness, embrace the active path, and embark on a transformative journey that intertwines our vegan values, somatic awareness, and the wisdom of Myung Sung. Together, we can unveil a world where peace and connection flourish in every step we take.
